On June 5th 2009 Hans de Boer received the Backer prize from the KNCV (Dutch Royal Chemical Society) for the best PhD thesis in Organic Chemistry for 2008.

During his PhD period at the University of Groningen (Netherlands) Hans worked on elucidating oxidation catalysis mechanisms using manganese catalysts based on triazacyclononane. This work led to the development of new methodologies to oxidise certain compounds that normally need to be oxidised using expensive and toxic chemicals. The mechanistic investigations gave new insights how to improve the catalytic performance of Dragon and how to make new compounds in an optimal and environmentally benign manner.

Dr Ronald Hage, Rahu Catalytics's Chief Scientific Officer comments: "We congratulate Hans for this achievement and thank him for his ongoing work in this area, which demonstrates how Rahu Catalytics is combining excellent scientific research with the exploitation of commercial applications and opportunities for its technology."
